Ram Navami or Rama Navami is, without doubt, an extremely special Hindu festival. This festival marks the birthday of Lord Ram and coincides with the last day of Chaitra Navaratri. Chaitra Navaratri is the first nine days of the new year according to the Hindu calendar, just after Holi.
As per Vedic text, Lord Rama or Ram was born in the ancient city of Ayodhya on this day. Devotees of Lord Ram believe Ram to be the incarnation of Lord Vishnu. According to the lunar Calendar, Lord Ram was born on Navami Tithi during the Shukla Paksha or Full Moon phase in the month of Chaitra.
Why is Lord Rama important?
Lord Ram or Rama is believed to be in the incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Lord Ram, the King of Ayodhya, epitomizes chivalry and virtue. His story is told briefly in the Mahabharata and at great length in the Ramayana, the two Epics of Indian literature. He was born to Queen Kausalya and King Dasharatha, in the Treta Yuga. This story is not only found in the ancient Hindu texts, but also in Jain and Buddhist scriptures.
According to the legend, King Dashratha had three queens, Kaushalya, Sumitra and Kaikeyi. All three did not bear an heir for the kingdom of Ayodhya. In desperation, King Dashratha conducted a sacred ritual called Putra Kamesti Yagna, as suggested by the great Sage Vashishth. The ritual called for the King to distribute a prasad of payasam, a special preparation of milk and rice, to his three wives. And then, as the story goes, on the ninth day of the Hindu month, queen Kaushalya gave birth to Lord Ram, and the other queens gave birth to Lakshmana and Bharat.
There are three Ramas mentioned in Hindu tradition—Parashurama, Balarama, and Ramachandra—the name is specifically associated with Ramachandra, the seventh incarnation (avatar) of Vishnu.
