Pentecost Sunday: Meaning and significance
Pentecost Sunday is the celebration of the Holy Spirit of God that came in the form of flames to the Apostles and other followers of Jesus Christ after his Ascension to heaven. The day is recorded in the bible in the fifth book of the New Testament. Pentecost Sunday is remembered 50 days or, in other words, the seventh Sunday after Easter. It is also known as Whitsunday in some countries.
It is significant as when the descent of the Holy Spirit took place, the people were able to talk in multiple languages and filled with fervour for the Lord.
What does Pentecost mean?
In the literal sense, Pentecost is a Greek word that means “fiftieth day.” It is celebrated fifty days after Easter. The day is the commemoration of the arrival of the Holy Spirit, promised by Jesus, to the disciples.
It is the peak of all blessings, and hence a reason to celebrate. The fruit of the Lord’s promise. The Bible records that about three thousand persons were witness to this event on that day.
What is the Holy Spirt?
God is three distinct persons who somehow are one in substance. This may sound confusing, but it is why God is unique and surpasses human understanding.
The trinity of God are, God the Father, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirt. The Holy Spirit lives in the hearts of people and can help you live life to the fullest as well talk about God without fear.
It is recorded on the first day of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit descended on the disciples in the form of wind and fire, they were transformed into courageous souls who preached the Gospel strongly.
The Significance of Pentecost Sunday
The significance of the day lies less in the day itself, but with its part in the work of Jesus Christ. After Jesus was put to death, for the sins of mankind, he was raised back to life after three days. This resurrection is the victory of God over death and anyone who believes can partake in eternal life.
After his resurrection, Jesus met with his disciples and spent time with them before he ascended to Heaven. His followers then thought that the only way they could remember Jesus was through the memories in their mind. But on the day of Pentecost, with the arrival of the Holy Spirt, their hearts were full, and the message of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ was more alive to them than ever.
Pentecost is often known as the “birthday of the Church” because it was on this day that God’s final covenant with humankind was complete. Through the coming of the Holy Spirit, the first Christians could look back on the events in the life of Jesus was new insight and see how they fit in with all that had been foretold by the prophets of the Old Testament.
