The Traditional games and activities of Onam celebration
Onam is celebrated with great excitement and joy by Malayalees in Kerala and across the world. Onam is a celebration of harvest and plenty. The story of Onam is very interesting. According to folklore, in ancient times, there was a King Mahabali who reigned in this region and his reign was a time of plently and great prosperity. So much that evn the Gods were jealous of him and tricked him to get rid of him. According to legends, King Mahabali visits his beloved region and people every year on Onam and beautiful pookolum or floral floor art is arranged for his welcome.
The other important part of Onam is the meal, also called the Sadhya. The sadhya is a traditional Kerala meal of more than twenty dishes both sweet and savoury that is eaten off a banana leaf. After the Sadya and the siesta that follows is the time for games. Ball games like Onappanthu, Thalappanthu, Cheettukali or card games, Aattakkalam kuthuka, Kambithayam, Kilikali or bird game, Kannanamunnikkali, and so on for the whole family to participate.
Family and community games
Games play a big part of the Onam celebration. Some common games are listed below
1. Traditional Onam Swing games or Oonjaalaattom
The word Oonjaal means swing. The swing is beautifully decorated with flowers and playing on swings by the women and children is an integral part of Onam.
2. Kilithattu
This is a popular game, very similar to “dog and the bone”. The game is played by one against four people at a time. The four men try to protect a stone also known as the ‘egg’ –which is placed in the middle of a square from the player trying to steal it. The men trying to steal the ‘egg’ stand in four squares drawn inside the big one. This player is allowed to run along the inner lines of the small squares tries to touch the men with his hands and feet. If the den succeeds in touching one of them, that player is out of the game. The game ends either when the ‘egg’ has been stolen or when the player makes physical contact with all four men.
3. Kazhakayatta
In Kazhakayattam, a game for youngsters, the competitors attempt to climb a long, oil-slicked pole to get to the prize tied on the top. The prize usually would be in the form of sweetmeats or money.
4. Naadanpanthukal
Naadanpanthukali, a game that may be described as a combination between football and cricket played in the country style, is popular in the villages of Kerala.
5. Olenjaali
Olenjaali, also the name of a common bird in Kerala, is an Onam sport for women. Here, the den tries to touch the ‘Olenjaali’, one of the women, with a branch. The Olenjaali stands in the middle of a chain formed by the rest of the women to protect her. While the game is on, the den and the rest of the players engage in a loud dialogue that entertains spectators and adds to the excitement of the game.
6. Kite-flying
Though popular throughout the windy months, kite flying is a popular activity on Onam. In some parts of the state, the sky becomes a backdrop to colourful collection of different kites.
7. Vadamvali
Probably one of the most popular sports, this is usually reserved for the end. Based on the simple game of Tug -of0war, this favourite game brings in all the family to either participate or cheer for their team. It is played with great enthusiasm all across the State during Onam.
Professional games and sports of Onam- Boat race
The most spectacular and most competitive Onam sport is the boat race or vallomkali. This is conducted every year and the participants practice months in advance for the competition. The thrilling races on the beautiful coconut-tree fringed backwaters and rivers are a sight to behold.
Teams compete in a variety of boats, both big and small but the one that really brings the crowds in is the Chundan vallom or the snake boat. These spectacular boats are manned by over a hundred oarsmen who row to the beat of traditional music, accompanied by drums and cymbals. Crowds gather on either bank cheer them on. It's a sight not to be missed and that is why every year, people from all over the world come to Kerala to watch.

ओणम केरल और दुनियाभर में मलयाली लोगों द्वारा बड़े उत्साह और खुशी के साथ मनाया जाता है। ओणम फसल और प्रचुरता का उत्सव है। साथ ही, लोककथाओं के अनुसार, प्राचीन काल में, एक राजा महाबली थे जो इस क्षेत्र में राज्य करते थे और उनका शासन काल प्रचुरता और महान समृद्धि का था। किंवदंतियों के अनुसार, राजा महाबली हर साल ओणम पर अपने प्रिय क्षेत्र और लोगों से मिलने आते हैं और उनके स्वागत के लिए सुंदर पुकुलम या पुष्पों से सजी फ्लोर आर्ट की व्यवस्था की जाती है।
ओणम का दूसरा महत्वपूर्ण हिस्सा भोजन है, जिसे साध्य भी कहा जाता है। साध्य केरल का एक पारंपरिक भोजन है जिसमें बीस से अधिक मीठे और नमकीन दोनों तरह के व्यंजन होते हैं जिन्हें केले के पत्ते से खाया जाता है। सध्या और सिएस्ता के बाद खेलों का समय आता है। गेंदों के खेल जैसे ओनप्पनथु, थलप्पनथु, चेट्टुकली या ताश का खेल, अट्टाक्कलमकुथुका, कम्बिथायम, किलिकली या पक्षी खेल, कन्नानामुन्निक्कली, इत्यादि जिसमें पूरा परिवार भाग लेता है।
परिवार और सामुदायिक खेल
खेल ओणम उत्सव का एक बड़ा भाग निभाते हैं। कुछ सामान्य खेल नीचे सूचीबद्ध हैं
1. पारंपरिक ओणम झूले के खेल या ऊंजालाट्टम
ऊंजाल शब्द का अर्थ झूला होता है। झूले को फूलों से खूबसूरती से सजाया जाता है और महिलाओं और बच्चों द्वारा झूलों पर खेलना ओणम का एक अभिन्न अंग है।
2. किलिथट्टु
यह एक लोकप्रिय खेल है, जो "कुत्ते और हड्डी" के बहुत समान। खेल एक बार में चार लोगों के विरुद्ध खेला जाता है। चार आदमी एक पत्थर की रक्षा करने की कोशिश करते हैं जिसे 'अंडा' भी कहा जाता है-जिसे चोरी करने की कोशिश कर रहे खिलाड़ी से एक वर्ग के बीच में रखा जाता है। 'अंडे' को चुराने की कोशिश करने वाले पुरुष बड़े वाले के अंदर खींचे गए चार वर्गों में खड़े होते हैं। इस खिलाड़ी को छोटे वर्गों की आंतरिक रेखाओं के साथ दौड़ने की अनुमति होती है जो अपने हाथों और पैरों से पुरुषों को छूने की कोशिश करता है। यदि मांद उनमें से किसी एक को छूने में सफल हो जाता है, तो वह खिलाड़ी खेल से बाहर हो जाता है। खेल तब समाप्त होता है जब या तो 'अंडा' चोरी हो जाता है या जब खिलाड़ी सभी चारों पुरुषों को स्पर्श कर लेता है।
3. कजाकायट्टा
कजाकायट्टम, युवाओं के लिए एक खेल, प्रतियोगी एक लंबे, तेल से सने खंभे के शीर्ष पर बंधे पुरस्कार को पाने के लिए उस पर चढ़ने का प्रयास करते हैं। पुरस्कार आमतौर पर मिठाई या पैसे के रूप में होगा।

7. वडमवली

ओणम के पेशेवर खेल और स्पोर्ट्स- नौकादौड़
सबसे शानदार और सबसे अधिक प्रतिस्पर्धी ओणम खेल नौकादौड़ या वल्लोमकली है। यह हर साल आयोजित किया जाता है और प्रतिभागी प्रतियोगिता के लिए महीनों पहले अभ्यास करते हैं। खूबसूरत नारियल के पेड़ के किनारे वाले बैकवाटर और नदियों पर रोमांचकारी दौड़ साँस रोक देने वाली होती है।
टीमें, बड़ी और छोटी दोनों, विभिन्न प्रकार की नौकाओं में प्रतिस्पर्धा करती हैं, लेकिन जो वास्तव में भीड़ लाती है वह है चुंदनवल्लम या स्नेक बोट। इन शानदार नौकाओं में सौ से अधिक नाविक सवार होते हैं, जो ढोल और झांझ के साथ पारंपरिक संगीत की धुन पर नौका चलाते हैं। दोनों किनारों पर उनका उत्साहवर्धन करने के लिए भीड़ जमा होती है। यह एक ऐसा नजारा है जिसे खोना नहीं चाहिए और इसीलिए हर साल दुनियाभर से लोग इसे देखने केरल आते हैं।
