Muharram- Significance of the Day of Ashura
Muharram is observed during the first month of the Islamic year. Muharram is considered one of the most holy months of the Islamic calendar, second only to Ramadan. The word Muharram means “forbidden”. This significance implied to Muslims is that they are required to consider this holy month as a period of reflection and prayer.

Is Muharram a happy occasion?
Across the world, during the month of Muharram, Shia Muslims mourn for the death of Hazrat Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad. Shia Muslims also mourn the demise of Imam Hussain Ibn Ali and his family. Hussain Ibn Ali and his family and followers were deprived of even water and tortured, and most of them were killed by the army of Yazid I at the Battle of Karbala. On Muharram, mourners offer prayers at mosques and take out processions grieving the death of the Prophet's grandson.
Muharram, the second most holy month, is observed with great reverence by Muslims across the world. It was during Muharram that Prophet Muhammad went from Mecca to Medina. For the Shia sect of Muslims wearing black clothes during the period Muharram is practiced.

Significance of the Day of Ashura
During the month of Muharram, the first in the Islamic lunar calendar, the Day of Ashura is very significant. The day is a symbol of struggle against injustice and oppression.

Is it compulsory for Muslims to fast during Muharram?
A lot of Sunni Muslims across the world voluntarily fast during the ten days of Muharram, but it is not compulsory like it is during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Some Muslims also observe a half day fast as part of their mourning.
Some say he first decided to do so after discovering that Jewish communities fasted on this day to mark Moses and the Israelites being saved. It was also thought to be a day that Moses himself fasted.
Some make pilgrimages to a shrine to Husayn ibn Ali in Kerbala, while in Shi’a communities around the world, parades take place during which people walk through the streets beating their chests to show grief. Others practice self-flagellation to commemorate the suffering he went through, but many clerics discourage this and call for people to give blood donations as an alternative.

क्या मुहर्रम के दौरान मुसलमानों के लिए रोजा रखना अनिवार्य है?
