Baisakhi- The celebration of plenty

Baisakhi is the spring harvest festival celebrated mainly in Punjab and also in other parts of India by Hindus and Sikhs. Baisakhi is the mark of the New Year and brings in hope and joy. Additionally, Baisakhi honours the Khalsa Path of warriors founded by Guru Gobind Singh.

Baisakhi is celebrated with great gusto and delight. Gurudwaras, Temples are decorated and large number of devotees visit. Homes as well as community centres come alive with merriment and festivity.

The history of Baisakhi
The origin of Baisakhi can be traced all the way to 1699, when a celebration was commemorated for the Khalsa - Brotherhood of Saint Soldiers. There also other reasons for the celebration. They are:

• The beginning of the New Year, according to the Lunar Calendar falls on this day. It is a time when harvests are made and bountiful crops fill the homes and villages. For this reason, it is a day to offer thanks.
• According to history, in 1699 Guru Gobind Singh who was the 10th Sikh guru began the Khalsa Panth and famously evoked nationalism and unity among the Sikhs.
• It is also believed that on this day his first batch of five disciples who are commonly called the Panj Piaras began calling themselves Singhs. This conversion has been done by administering nectar to them and indicating them into the marital community.
• On this day in 1699, the people had marked the end of the long tradition of gurus in Sikhism and introduced the Guru Granth Sahib as the eternal guide for their community.

Bhangra Dance Battles
The most fun and fascinating Baisakhi tradition is the dance battles. Men, women and take part in the dance battles.
